Client Needs

The client were originally focused on the supply of quarried/recycled aggregates, site clearance, contract crushing and disposal of contaminated materials. As the Energy from Waste industry grew, they developed the process for Incinerator Bottom Ash (“IBA”) to be carefully blended with aggregate to provide a more sustainable, lower cost and higher quality product. They now have one of the most advanced IBA recycling facilities in Europe.

The processes involved in this business model are extremely energy intensive and both the Midlands sites are use vast amounts of electricity and as with many UK businesses they have had to deal with steep increases in electricity prices over the last two years.

Both sites have large amounts of roof space and therefore solar PV is an ideal solution to provide on-site generation, which will dramatically reduce their energy costs and cut carbon emissions.

Project Solution

Myriad were able to provide a very competitive Solar PV quotation. We analysed energy consumption data from both sites in order to calculate the optimum PV system sizes, which would maximise onsite usage and minimize export to the grid, in order to deliver the best possible ROI.

Using PVGIS (industry standard geo-locational PV generation software) we calculated that the PV system would generate an estimated 380,098 kWh/pa at Site 1 and 361,052 kWh/pa at Site 2.

Myriad undertook the DNO applications and gained approval from UK Power Networks for Site 1 and from National Grid for Site 2. UK Power Networks required us to export limit the 449 PV system at Site 1 to 200kW. We are using Solis Export Power Manager system to do this. We also arranged for the structural surveys of the roofs to be done at both sites and completed the Permitted Developments Rights applications.

As always, we installed Tier 1 panels, in this case, JA Solar 550w modules and Solis inverters, which are one of the most trusted inverter brands in the solar sector.

Due to the nature of the on-site processes, there is a large amount of dust generated at both sites, so Myriad are putting in place a robotic panel cleaning regime, as part of a bespoke monitoring and maintenance package.
