Project Solution

The farm is mainly arable, key activities focus on barley, wheat and potato production, including growing, harvesting, drying and storage. They have a farm workshop and commercial biomass boiler on site.

Based on energy data provided, we established the optimum system size to be 50kW.

The new grain-store was the obvious location for the PV panels. The metal trapezoidal roof was the easiest to fix the PV system to and the panels could sit in the valley of the roof, minimising scaffolding costs. Although the building has an east-west orientation, the predicated yield was still excellent.

The 3phase meter, main incoming electrics and distribution board are located adjacent to this shed, keeping cable runs relatively short.

System Description

Myriad undertook the DNO application to Western Power. Due to issues with the local infrastructure, the maximum PV system size that could be installed, without significant upgrade work was 42kW (total network capacity) and this would have to be export limited to 23kW.

Using PVGIS (industry standard geo-locational PV generation software) we calculated that the PV system would generate an estimated 32,760 kWh per annum.

Based on the customers current electricity supply rate (25p/kWh) the PV system is estimated to pay for itself in 5.4 years. The ROI will of course improve as electricity prices go up.
