Servicing of Heat Interface Units (HIUs)

Servicing of Heat Interface Units (HIUs)

As with any renewable technology, your Heat Interface Unit (HIU) needs to be maintained to prolong its lifespan, ensuring you achieve a readily available source of heat and hot water for years to come.

Wherever you are in the UK, there’ll be an expert on hand from Myriad to ensure you receive the in-depth knowledge necessary to carry out full service and maintenance work on you HIU. Whether your products are Herz, Danfoss, Heatrae, Evinox, Altecnic, Intatec, Rhico, Worcester, Thermal Integration or any other, we can provide a service package that meets your requirements.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL HIU SERVICE INCLUDE?

Whilst there are many different types of HIUs on the market, the principle of operation is fairly standard which means we are able to service the majority of brands we may come accross.

  • Overall inspection and checking for leaks
  • Cleaning out the strainer if present
  • Open/close all isolators to check operation
  • Check operation of any safety valves

  • Review all temperature measuring points
  • Review flow rate and pump operation
  • Inspect expansion vessel and record air charge pressure

  • Record system water pressure
  • Check electrical isolator works correctly and safely
  • Adjust temperature control valves as necessary to provide correct temperatures

SERVICE PLANS

We would recommend an annual visit to ensure everything is working correctly, correct temperatures are being achieved etc. You will be provided with a written report that provides a full account of all the activities undertaken on the HIU including recommendations for further works.

A record sticker should also be left on the HIU for easy future reference.

What Is An HIU?

A heat interface unit (HIU) is a block about the same size as a domestic boiler that takes heat from a central source and distributes it to the property.

HIUs are commonly installed in apartments instead of a gas boiler. The central boiler may be in the basement and heating pipes transfer hot water to each HIU. The radiators and domestic hot water taps are piped to the HIU. Inside the HIU is a series of control valves and heat exchangers to control the amount of heat that goes to the radiators/tap water.

There are ‘Direct’ and ‘Indirect’ versions available. Mostly you see the ‘Indirect’ versions in the UK. These have a heat exchanger for supplying central heating and also a heat exchanger for instantaneous domestic hot ‘tap’ water.

Inside there will also be a complete set of parts to give a fully working system. Only the pipes to the radiators and taps are required to be connected, including an expansion vessel, a heat meter, a circulation pump and temperature control actuators.

Why Are HIUs A Good Idea?

As an HIU is a direct replacement for a gas boiler it means that gas is not needed inside the apartment. This is good from a safety, installation and maintenance cost perspective. Also, if the central boiler is replaced with a low carbon option, eg Biomass, then the whole apartment block could become low carbon very simply and cheaply.

Do HIUs Need Servicing?

Servicing is essential to ensure the correct temperatures are achieved in the heating and hot water system and the whole system is working efficiently.
