How PV can I have installed on my roof?
Depending on several factors, like orientation, pitch, and latitude, PV panels provide approximately 180-230W/m². Below is a list of rough outputs you might expect from a given area of roof:
For this rule of thumb assume the building footprint is equal to the roof area.
- 500m² => 100kW
- 2,000m² => 360kW
- 5,000m² => 1,000kW

Do I need to service the solar system?
Solar PV systems do require regular servicing as despite there being no moving parts there are sometimes failures of strings and inverters which will reduce yield if not spotted quickly and rectified. The panels will also need cleaning periodically if they are in a location where dust and debris may collect on them. If this happens the shading from the dust etc can affect the output of the whole system quite significantly so you do need to make sure the panels are kept clean.
Every year you should get the system inspected by a qualified installer to check the inverters and panel strings are all working correctly.

Minimum Requirements for a Good Return on your PV Installation
If your site meet at least 3 of these then we would be very confident in your system yielding a simple payback of between 3-4 years*.
- Building footprint / Roof area > 500m2
- Annual bill > £40k
- Annual consumption > 200,000 kWh
- Roof not subject to significant shading
*Payback calculated on a metal trapezoidal roof. More complex roof materials will increase the payback time.

How much will the PV installation cost?
For roof mounted solar PV systems the capital cost of a fully installed system is typically between £500/kW and £650/kW giving a typical pay back between 2-5 years.
