Heat Pumps: The Renewable Energy Technology

Heat pumps are a renewable energy technology that converts low-grade – low-temperature heat into higher-temperature heat which can be used to heat buildings. This process delivers green, low-cost, energy-saving heating and hot water all year round.

There are 3 main types of heat pumps available for the built environment, classified by where they source their primary energy (air, ground or water).

Heat Pumps work by extracting heat from natural sources, transferring it into what’s known as a ‘refrigerant’. This is a fluid with a very low evaporation temperature.

Once heated, this refrigerant is turned into gas, and then used to heat water. It's a continuous cycle: an expansion valve will revert the gas back into a liquid.


Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)

Arguably the easiest to install than other water source alternatives, ASHPs absorb heat from the ambient air and remain operational in temperatures as low as -20°C.

The ease of installation comes from it only needing a connection to the mains water supply, and electrical connection and – in some cases – a refrigerent connection.

They are best suited to environments where space is limited and ground works are difficult as you won’t need to bury pipes in the ground.

Ideal for both commercial and residential applications, ASHPs can be installed on the roof or at ground level.

Ground Source heat Pumps (GSHPs)

As the name suggests, ground source heat pumps absorb heat energy from the ground. They use a series of ground loops which can be installed in horizontal trenches, or vertically in a borehole.

A borehole installation will offer less disruption to the nearby landscape but will require more of an initial investment.

Due to the size of a GSHP, they are better suited to new build developments where their installation can be factored in during the early design stages of a project. Buffer tanks, water cylinders, etc, will all be grappling for space, so prior planning and close consideration of existing infrastructure is crucial.

Open Loop Heat Pump

This draws in water from a water source, for example, a borehole, lake or river into the heat pump, absorbing its energy as it passes through the system.

For this reason, it is best suited in areas or developments that can be located close to water. As such, this may require additional approval or consent from the Environmental Agency.
