The ORC systems allow generating clean energy through the use of what is often considered as waste, or by exploiting inexhaustible energy sources, such as the sun or the heat of the earth.  These systems are able to generate valuable electrical energy by recycling the heat of the industrial process cycles, or by exploiting the thermal energy generated by the waste or scraps processing combustion, as better illustrated in the following pages.

What is the Organic Rankine Cycle?
The ORC is a simple high efficiency thermodynamic cycle that has ideal characteristics for conversion of thermal energy sources at low-medium temperature (90 - 200 °C) into electrical energy. Invented by Scottish physicist William Rankine (1820 -1872), one of the fathers of thermodynamics, this cycle operates in an emission-free closed loop the operation of which is illustrated by the following diagram. 
The pump (1) transports the organic fluid to the heat exchanger (2) where it is evaporated and used to drive the turbine (3), generating electricity (Wturbine) and thermal energy for heating (Qout) in the heat exchanger (4). (Qin) is the heat needed to drive the process, this can be either waste heat from an engine water jacket/flue or directly from a biomass boiler for example.

Many farmers choose to use waste from their animals to generate biogas through the use of anaerobic digesters; this biogas is then used as fuel for engines connected to electrical generators. Few know, however, that thanks to an ORC system it is possible to increase to the electrical efficiency of such systems by recovering the residue heat of the exhaust gas and the water cooling jackets. This is also possible with biogas, syngas, vegetable oil, methane or biofuel.
The ULH (Ultra Low Heat) series of ORC (30-50kWe) are designed as a compact and efficient solution for the exploitation of low temperature thermal sources and specifically designed to operate in engine heat recovery applications as well as industrial processes, exploitation of geothermal heat.
