In order to achieve the low emissions promised by the boiler manufacturers, biomass boilers need to be properly maintained so they work as the manufacturer intended.
When the RHI started, the simple fact was that anyone could buy a commercial biomass boiler, install it and claim government subsidies without any checks over whether it had been installed properly. The same is happening with the service of these boilers, there is no way for clients to know if their service company really does have the necessary skills and experience.
OFGEM have realised that many biomass boilers are not working as they should be - Biomass Service and Maintenance is a specialist skillset many companies just do not have. To improve the situation OFGEM have introduced an accreditation scheme for the maintenance of biomass boilers, covering, for the first time, commercial boilers, as well as domestic.
